MIXING OF DELOUSING MEDICINE IN BATH TREATMENT OF SALMON Salmo salar AQUACULTURE CAGES

Chemical treatment of sea lice infestations on Atlantic salmon today is mainly done through bath treatment, alternating between several agents. The treatment is done either in well-boats, or it can be administered directly in the cages when a tarp isused to control and close off the cage volume. If there is otherwise no well boat operations planned the use of tarps is the preferred way which also can be argued to put less stress on the fish.Preliminary studies on the distribution of delousing agent in sea cages have revealed a need for knowledge in this topic of sea-lice control (BJ0ru et al. 2004, Fridell et al 2009). In cooperation between industry and researchers, the project Topilouse contained a work-package with focus on handling of the tarp and understanding the mixing of agent and oxygen within this variation of closed cages. By exploring the driving forces and physics (Gansel & Oppedal 2012), the aim has been to be able to replicate this in a hydrodynamic model and thus be able to provide an environment for testing new and existing technology. This will be a powerful tool to ensure proper administration of delousing agents and oxygen during future bath treatments.
