Mobile ad hoc networks (manet) raise new problems in terms of security. Indeed, their characteristics make many existing solutions developed for networks with a permanent and stable architecture become inefficient. We propose to enforce the security of such networks with an intrusion detection system (IDS), specifically designed for manets. Our proposition relies on the implementation of a local IDS on each node of the network. Local IDS communicate with each other using mobile agents and inform one another of the intrusions they detect by exchanging alerts. In this article, we present our architecture and analyse the contribution of mobile agents in an ad hoc context.
