Gender Ideology in Seno Gumira Ajidarma's Clara: A Critical Discourse Analysis

This paper aims at finding gender ideology issues in Seno Gumira Ajidarma's Clara from the critical discourse analysis perspective. The concept of gender in this paper refers to Sara Mills' (1995) who used the term to explain different relation between women and men which cannot be separated from race and class. Whereas, ideology is defined as the service of power and is created in societies in which relations and domination are based on social structures such as class and gender (Phillips & Jorgensen, 2002). The writer will apply Sara Milts' model (in Darma, 2009) by identifying the subject of narration and object of narration in the short story. The analysis will be done in the framework of Fairclough's critical discourse methods, i.e linguistic description of the language text, interpretation of the relationship between the discursive processes and the text, and explanation of the relationship between the discursive processes and social processes (1995). Thus, the analysis will link the micro-context and macro context of the discourse by considering both the textual production and reception (Mills, 1995).
