The LIGO detectors are based on 4km Michelson interferometers designed to sense the deformation of space-time induced by gravitational waves. To achieve the sensitivity necessary to detect these faint waves, the detectors use Fabry-Perot cavities in the 4 km arms, and multiple auxiliary optical systems including mode cleaners and recycling cavities, both for the light source entering the interferometers, and for the light carrying the signal on the output side.
