The endothelial glycocalyx (EG) is a unique endovascular layer, essential for endothelial function. Inflammation and sepsis-associated degradation of the pulmonary EG is a leading factor contributing to lung injury. The mechanisms by which the pulmonary EG is reconstituted appear to vary with the inciting injury.
