Studies in humans have determined that supraphysiological concentrations of ascorbate (plasma concentrations >20 mM, i.e., pharmacological ascorbate (P-AscH)) readily produce high fluxes of H202 via its oxidation; this H2O2 preferentially induces cancer cell death compared to normal cells. The vast majority of in vitro studies have focused on the effects of P-AscH- on human tumor cells. The effects of P-AscH- on canine osteosarcoma, and if high levels of ascorbate are achievable in dogs, are unknown.
