S. aureus is the most frequently isolated pathogen of mastitis. Neutrophils are recruited to quarters once they are infected, thereby increasing SCC in milk significantly. It plays a crucial role in bacterial clearance especially through releasing neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs). On the contrary, S. aureus has evolved the ability to produce nuclease to escape from the killing by neutrophil via various mechanisms such as degrading NETs. So, here we investigated whether vaccination with the nuclease could provide effective protection against S. aureus infection.
