Synthesis and surface modification of magnetite nanoparticles using oleic acid has been carried out in this work. Here, magnetite nanoparticles were synthesized via simultaneously precipitation (co-precipitation) technique where both Fe (II) and Fe (III) salts were used as the iron precursors in aqueous solution. The as-prepared nanoparticles, both unmodified and surface-modified, were characterized using HR-TEM, SAED and FTIR. According to the result, oleic acid was able to be attached on the exterior of the magnetite nanoparticles, causing them to have hydrophobic feature. In addition, the colloidal stability of both unmodified and surface-modified magnetite nanoparticles was also evaluated by measuring zeta potential at high saline water system.
