PHYSICAL REHABILITATION POST CRUCIATE SURGERY: WHAT IS THEEVIDENCE?

Rehabilitation following ACL surgery in humans is an integral aspect of post-operative care and hastens return to activity and sport. Focus is placed in early weight bearing, reduction of pain and inflammation, restoring range of motion, and regainingstrength and neuromuscular control. Bracing is not recommended in human ACL patients. Post-operative rehabilitation can restore stifle ROM and muscle mass earlier in the convalescent period and can result in earlier return to normal function following surgery for CCL disease in dogs. Cryotherapy, ESWT, NMES and laser may have roles in reducing inflammation and speeding healing in dogs following CCL surgery. Post-operative bandaging is not recommended in dogs following CCL surgery. Additional research is needed to determine the optimal rehabilitation protocol for dogs following CCL surgery.
