Historically, thoughts of the host-microbial interaction have typically focused on a host-pathogen approach, whereby microbes cause disease and must often be eliminated. While that is certainly true in many situations, it is an overly simplistic approach that ignores the complex and critical host-microbial interaction that shapes, fosters and maintains life. Microbes can certainly cause disease. At the same time, we cannot live in a microbe-free environment and there is clear evidence that a lack ofproper host-microbial interactions is detrimental to health, and even survival.
