Green roofs are important to control peak flow and filter contaminants in LCD practices. China is promoting more construction of green roofs. The enormous existing buildings in urban areas offer a fertile field to construct extensive green roofs. But inherent technical limitations exist. This paper reviewed green roof research on construction engineering, substrates, plants, energy saving, and stormwater control. The integration of extensive green roof techniques were discussed to construct such green roofs on various existing buildings. A case study in Shanghai was introduced. The trial construction and preliminary tests of the flexible module system demonstrated its potential to be promoted in Shanghai. But the reliability and further effects of the system remain to be tested in the long-term experiments.
