Ensuring that bolts maintain their design preload over time is a task which may end up requiring a large share of the maintenance efforts for wind turbines. At the same time, there is general consensus among experts that the majority of bolted joint failures is imputable to loss of preload or insufficient preloading during the bolted joint assembly.
