ACUPUNCTURE POINTS, LARGE INTESTINE 18 AND STOMACH 37, UTILIZED IN THE DIAGNOSIS OF LARGE COLON ULCERS

:Three horses will be discussed: 30 year old, Thoroughbred gray mare; 30 year old Quarter horse sorrel colored mare; 10 year old, Arabian bay colored mare. The two older horses have been under my veterinary care since they were seven years of age. The tenyear old horse is owned by me, and came into my possession two years ago. Two of the three horses presented with head shaking. The third horse presented with objection to large, rather than small, pellet feed. All were sensitive to palpation directly beneath the ear in a depression referred to as the "Ear Gate" acupuncture points. After my recent attendance at the 2015 International Traditional Chinese Veterinary Conference, hosted by the Chi Institute in November, I have found all three horses to respond to the acupuncture diagnosis and herbal formula treatment for large colon ulcers. Currently, large colon ulcers are diagnosed by Western Veterinary Medicine based on post mortem findings on necropsy. Horses having large colon ulcers may display several clinical signs including head shaking, loss of top line, fatigue syndrome while under saddle, poor carriage of rear limbs, etc. Presentation of these vague signs can often confuse the veterinarian at large. Large colon ulcers may be as common as gastric ulcers.
