CONTROVERSIES IN ONCOLOGY: MELANOMA VACCINE

Canine malignant melanoma (CMM) of the oral cavity, nail bed, foot pad and mucocutaneous junction is a spontaneously occurring, highly aggressive and frequently metastatic neoplasm. CMM is the most common oral tumor in dogs and commonly occurs in Poodles, Dachshund, Scottish terriers, Golden retrievers, Schanuazer and Rottweiler. The tumor is most commonly located on the gingiva (-50%), buccal/labial (-30%), tongue (-5%) and hard palate (-15%). Biologically, these are deemed aggressive with a high metastatic rate, although recent evidence suggest some locations may carry a better prognosis. There is also reported a "low grade" subtype that may carry a more favorable prognosis. The history for most dogs involves signs such as: halitosis, abnormal chewing, weight loss, hypersalivation, bleeding from the mouth, or the visualization of a mass.
