A complex interaction between the renal and cardiovascular systems exists in both health and disease. In humans, the pathological interactions between these 2 organ systems are increasingly regarded as important and deserving of further definition, classification, and understanding. The term "cardiorenal syndrome" or CRS has been put forwards by physicians to describe this pathological interplay. Although kidney and cardiovascular disease are common in dogs and cats, the exact nature of this interaction is not well-defined or described within the veterinary profession. The members of the working group responsible for the current veterinary-focused presentation chose to call this cardiovascular-renal interaction "Cardiovascular-Renal Disorders" or CvRD to reflect the interplay of these organ systems in both health and disease, such that the entirety of the cardiovascular system (including both the heart and vasculature) is likely involved. In addition, the widely varied clinical manifestations of this interrelationship preclude legitimately terming the entity as a single syndrome.
