BLOOD TYPING AND CROSSMATCHING PRIOR TO TRANSFUSION

Hemolytic transfusion reactions occur when there is alloantibody directed against RBC surface antigens which define the blood groups of animals. The genes, structure, and physiology of the antigens and their polymorphisms are variably understood,2" 5but their pathophysiology is well-characterized. Two key factors determining severity of a hemolytic reaction are antibody litre and type. A hemolytic reaction may occur as an acute intravascular crisis or as a delayed event, where a transfusion is "lost" over several days or weeks.
