1.4 million individuals in the US suffer from Salmonella-associated disease every year.1 The most important serovar in this context is S. Typhimurium (= S. enterka subspecies enterica serovar Typhimurium), which accounts for 21.9% of all human Salmonella isolates.2 Salmonellosis in humans is almost exclusively food borne and pork products are frequently associated with clinical cases.13 Salmonella se-rovars are also the third most frequent infectious cause for diarrhea in nursery as well as in grower/ finisher pigs,' with S. Typhimurium being the most prevalent serovar isolated from clinical samples.2 S. Typhimurium control in pigs is therefore not only a means to reduce economic losses in the herd, but also an important food safety issue. Due to the implications for public health, it can be expected that swine producers in the US will eventually be pressured by market forces and, perhaps, governmental pressures to control S. Typhimurium infections in their herds.5
