Ryegrasses of the genus Lolium are the most important fodder and turf grasses in temperate climate regions. Two species are mostly grown: Lolium perenne L. (perennial ryegrass, also called English ryegrass) and L. multiflorum L. (annual ryegrass, alsoknown as Italian ryegrass). Both perennial and annual grasses are wind pollinated outcrossing species, and usually form populations of highly heterozygous plants. Ryegrasses are valued for their high yield potential, fast establishment, adaptation to grazing, high palatability, and digestibility. They are also used as turf species for sports fields and recreational areas.
