A STRATEGY IN EFFECTIVE TEACHING OF SOFTWARE ENGINEERING PROCESS FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS

The Personal Software Process (PSP) is an educational program on the software process for the individual that Dr. Humphrey researched and developed as best practice in the industrial world at the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) of Carnegie Mellon University. At the Kyushu Institute of Technology, in cooperation with SEI, we achieved a great improvement in software quality skills from the introduction in 2007 of a five year PSP education program. This paper describes the objectives of introducing software process education and training, shows a tangible approach to software process education for graduate students who have no experience in the industry, and describes their performance. The PSP for Engineers course is held once a year for graduate students and is different in style to the SEI, because the students have inadequate software development skills and a university restricted curriculum. However, their performance tends to be similar to that of the SEI students. In particular, the defect density in the last assignment of the 3rd quartile is better than in the first assignment of the 1st quartile. Their productivity improved noticeably. Their software development skills also improved because most had no previous design experience. This paper also discusses management of the PSP course and relevance to other courses such as the Team Software Process, project management, and systems engineering.
