The market demand for components with increased functional integration with simultane-ous weight requires complex component geometries. This takes classic forming methods to their limits. For these component characteristics, sheet-bulk metal forming presents both ecological and economically interesting possibilities. The saving of process steps saves energy and resources, and is regarded as environmentally benign. Bulk metal forming on semi-finished sheet results in very high tool loads. This is a particular challenge for tool design and tools manufacturing. This task and the appropriate solutions for this are the con-tent of the following contribution. In addition, the importance of tribology for sheet-bulk metal forming is described. Simulations have shown that selectively customized tribologi-cal conditions improve the material flow and thus the mould filling. Various approaches are presented to implement functional surfaces for the setting of defined conditions of effective areas in relative movement in the forming process. Finally, the design and development of a reference tool for sheet-bulk metal forming is described.
