(5)Economic and Social Development Contribution of a Mining Project in a Region

摘要

This article analyzes key socioeconomic benefits that could come should the AngloGold Ashanti La Colosa project, located in Cajamarca, Tolima, Colombia, be developed. Some stakeholders have voiced concern over the project, arguing that the operation would bring negative environmental, social, and economical impacts; such as on water resources, agriculture, health, and poverty rates. To better determine the real impact of the project, this article explores three different scenarios that evaluate gross wealth, net wealth, job creation, and cost-effectiveness of social responsibility programs. These scenarios are: 1)Exploration phase (2012); 2)Operation phase (2023), and 3)if the project is not developed (2023). Each scenario is analyzed considering four variables: gross wealth, net wealth, job generation and cost-benefit analysis of the Social Responsibility programs.
