摘要

This paper discusses how oxides, dirt and tramp elements in scrap used for steelmaking affect the cost ofproduction and carbon footprint. Calculations show that there is a significant potential for saving by increasedprocessing or gathering of knowledge of the composition of your raw materials. Increased knowledge can form thebasis for better sorting of raw materials and this task can be assumed either by recyclers or by the steel producers. That is just a question of how the benefits of better sorting should be distributed between the two parties. We alsoshow in this paper that improved raw material calculations, based on better knowledge of material compositions, can form the basis for strategic decision making about the use, or not, of individual materials. A raw material thatbased purely on its purchase price looks attractive can be shown to add significant additional cost when put intoproduction. This additional costs come for example from increased slag amounts that lead to increased handlingcosts but also to increased energy and production costs per unit of steel produced.
