Across the country, some state legislatures advocate that the cost of a Bachelors Degree can be decreased by shrinking the time to complete the degree from four to three years. Much of this reduction comes through elimination of general education classes, primarily in the humanities area. Recent studies suggest this could prove disastrous for business colleges as business students report spending less time studying than students in other disciplines and score lower on tests of communications and cognitive thinking (Arum and Roska 2011). A report from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching calls for more integration of business and humanities curriculum (Colby et al. 2011) by eschewing the current "barbell model" of education where two equally heavy course loads, business and humanities, are only tenuously connected by a slender bar. Colby et al. endorse a double helix model, consistently linking and articulating the thought processes and pluralism between the humanities and business. This report by the Carnegie Foundation inspired a call for papers for a special issue of the Journal of Management Education titled "Integrating Liberal Learning, Humanities, and Management Education: Putting the Carnegie Report into Practice" (Statler and Guillet de Monthoux 2012).
