BP's Process Safety Journey: Enhancing Risk Management in Global Upstream Operations

BP has been implementing a global effort to enhance safety and operational risk management in operations and projects, which has incorporated the learning from the Deepwater Horizon and other high profile industry incidents. This paper provides a brief update on the status of drilling safety and oil spill response improvements, and then focuses on the wider process safety-related enhancements aimed at improving risk management, with examples from BP's upstream production operations. The overarching strategy is built of three enduring principles: 1. People - deep capability and a safe operating culture; 2. BP's Operating Management System (OMS) is the way BP operates; 3. Self and independent assurance confirming conduct of operating.
