The oil and gas industry, and related petrochemical businesses, has always been subject to regional, economic and, to some extent, geopolitical forces. Since the late 1990s, regional competitive shifts have been shaping global markets more than ever. The international refining and petrochemical markets have become more diverse over the past two decades with more countries and companies participating with a greater interplay of regional pressures. The rise of the BRICS economies (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) and more recently the developing MINT countries (Mexico, Indonesia, Nigeria, Turkey) are creating new opportunities for projects (and investment capital).
