Despite the decline in heavy engineering in the UK, advanced manufacturing processes are vital to the industrial system in high integrity industry sectors such as aerospace, marine and nuclear. Structural Integrity processes can be used to derive manufacturing requirements for high integrity components for these safety critical applications. The combination of material specification, material process control, advanced manufacturing techniques and inspection requirements needed for high integrity components is discussed and examples are given for marine and aerospace applications. Particular attention, is then focussed on the manufacture of reactor pressure vessels and other high integrity primary circuit components for the next generation of nuclear power and propulsion plants. Possible alternatives to traditional methods are briefly reviewed but these will offer their own challenges to achieving components with high demonstrable structural integrity.
