With the aging of the population and associated ocular surface drying the socioeconomic impact of dry eye disease will clearly exacerbate. The uniform and clear surface of the ocular tear film enables light rays to form clear images which are projected on the retina, carried along the optic nerves to the occipital cortex where they are interpreted by the brain. More than 10% of the population currently suffers from tear film abnormalities and these disorders are responsible for over 25% of visits to eye care professionals.
