Optimization of Extraction of Phytochemicals from Calendula officinalis by Response Surface Methodology

The aim of this study was to determine the optimum conditions of the extraction of antibacterial and antifungal components of Calendula officinalis. The extraction parameters studied were solid-to-liquid ratio, extraction temperature and time. By using Response surface method with Box-Behnken and Central Composite Design the optimum conditions were found as 41°C, 7 h, 3.3g/200 ml for temperature, time and solid-to-liquid ratio, respectively. The yield of extraction was evaluated as 90 percent under those optimum conditions. Saponins, triterpenes and flavonoids of the extracts were investigated and compared. Since Calendula officinalis has well known antibacterial and antifungal activities, two different types of products were produced by the extracts obtained under optimum conditions. The efficiencies of the products were also evaluated. It was concluded that the extraction of Calendula officinalis can be used in the production of wet wipes and hand sterilizators, effectively.
