BASIC DESIGN OF A FISH-TAIL LIKE MARINE STRUCTURE FOR FLARES OF A LNG PLANT

This article describes notable basic design aspects of a fish-tail like marine structure, situated at the South Pars Gas Field region along the North-Western shores of the Persian Gulf, including the hydrodynamics numerical modeling, structural design criteria, two- and three-dimensional physical model test results, as well as presenting a summary of the technical and economical multi-criteria analysis of various contending structural design alternatives. Notably, as a consequence of the particular shape of this coastal structure, physical modeling confirms that successive reflections of the incoming waves within the two semi-basins formed by the three closely placed adjacent branches, and the corresponding partially standing waves ensued at the foot of the structure not only lead to increased overtopping rates but also necessitate heavier armor units corresponding to this particular layout than expected from applying the empirical design formulae for simpler geometries.
