Flow regulation and diversions have pervasive effects on rivers and their floodplain communities (Poff et al., 1997). In dry regions, where competition for scarce water resources is intensified by occasional drought, there may be severe impacts on flora and fauna needing access to wetland refugia (Kingsford, 2006). Flow regime changes may also favour alien, invasive species (Bunn and Arthington, 2002).
