Sustainable Structural Engineering-Gaining Greater Benefits to Communities in Developing Nations

This paper reflects on potential broader benefits the structural engineer can bring to individual communities when undertaking design services; whilst particularly relevant to developing countries, there are also clear benefits when designing projects in developed nations in adopting the approach illustrated. A case study - The Sustainable Kindergarten School, Ghana is used to illustrate the benefits of structural engineers operating as "Global Workers and Local Thinkers" - an important theme in the global mission of the Institution of Structural Engineers.
