Electrospinning (e-spinning), a combination of two techniques (electrospray and spinning) is a novel and efficient process where polymer liquid is fabricated into ultra-fine fibres with diameters in the nanometer to sub-micrometer range. A high electric field is applied to the droplet of a fluid which may be a melt or solution coming out from the tip of a die, which acts as one of the electrodes. This leads to droplet deformation and finally to the ejection of a charged jet from the tip of the cone accelerating towards the counter electrode leading to the formation of continuous fibres. Recently, electrospun nanofibre matrices have gained a lot of attention and are being researched. Electrospinning has been regarded as an effective way to fabricate ultrafine fibres from a variety of synthetic or natural polymers. Due to their high surface to volume ratio, high porosity and good inter-pore connectivity, potential uses of e-spun fibres includes immobilized enzyme in nanofibrous membrane, tissue engineering scaffolds, platform for drug delivery and carrier for DNA. According to Huang et al., synthetic materials such as polylactide (PLA), 3-phosphoglyceric acid (PGA), polylactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA), and polycaprolactone (PCL) were common biopolymers used in the study of electrospinning. Recently, several studies were conducted on the electospinnrng from natural biopolymers such as silk fibrion, collagen, chitosan and fish gelatin.
