There seems no doubt that a revolution is occurring in companion animal surgery to meet the ever growing expectations of society who recognise companion animals as integral family members and wish to have the same level of medical and surgical care for them as they would for themselves. Evolution of veterinary practice and techniques will not just be required but will be expected, and to achieve this and maintain the level of professional integrity and good standing in society that the veterinary profession enjoys, we have a collective moral responsibility to offer the guardians of animals all of the options without bias, vested interest or agenda and also to develop an ethical framework which encourages legitimate progress without compromising standards of patient care.
