Metal-organic frameworks (MOF’s) are a relatively new class of porous crystalline materials that continues to grow in interest. MOF structures are composed of inorganic metals and organic linkers that are combined to form hybrid porous materials that typically maintain porosity upon the removal of solvent or guest molecules. Scientists have focused primarily on the construction of new MOF’s due to their tunable properties such as extra large pores and high surface areas as large as 10,400 m~2/g for MOF 210. Applications for MOF’s have largely been focused on gas storage and separations due to their ability to control the rates of adsorption and guest transport through the pores. There have been fewer studies on chemical sensing, drug delivery, and catalysis. A new flexible MMOF (microporous metal organic framework) called Rutgers Recyclable Porous Material-3 (Zn2(bpdc)_2(bpee) or RPM3) has interesting properties due to its 3D arrangement of Zn II metal centers between two coordinating ligands, 4,4’-biphenyldicarboxylate (bpdc) and 1,2-bipyridylethylene (bpee), as shown in figure 1.
