With greater understanding of coastal processes and limitations placed on funding there is a need perhaps greater than ever to devise new an innovative ways of managing our coasts. We will not and should not always seek to defend them. This Pathfinder Programme has been an opportunity to trial some new coastal management tools. Some have been simple and straightforward: realigning a footpath; clearing debris. Others have required more innovative solutions: buying houses, demolishing them and using the planning system to enhance the values and part fund the process.
