Practical Problems of Cardiac Involvement in the Newborn of Diabetic Mother

Summary:Authors studied the main aspects of cardiac involvement in 76 newboms of diabetic mother (IDMs) investigated in the first week of life.Fetal echo (36 cases): cardiomegaly and myocardial hypertrophy of LV(9). Clinical exam in newborn:2 cases signs of heart failure,at rest asymptomatic.Echo- cardiography: non obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) asy-metric IVS hypertrophy (42 % cases);LV diastolic dysfunction(52%), nor-mal systolic function,congenital cardiac anomalies (10). Control at 6-12 months of age (49):normal morphological cardiac aspect and diastolic and systolic LV function. Conclusions :IDMs presents a high risk for congenital (19 %) or acquired cardiac diseases HCM(42 %). Fetal Echo should be performed to all diabetic pregnant women and completed by a early cardiologic screening for these newborns especially by Doppler Echo.
