This paper presents the novel DC Power Distribution System incorporating Current Multiplier DC/DC converters, as a key factor in improving the efficiency of sea water Impressed Current Cathodic Protection systems. Comparison with the traditional approach of using Transformer Rectifier units as dominant building blocks is presented. The nature of major problems with traditional approach is investigated, with poor energy efficiency found to be of particular concern. The novel approach presented overcomes these problems, providing for a substantial reduction of CO2 emissions related to ICCP systems protecting submerged steel structures in sea water. A description of the configuration and elements of the new system is provided, as well as guidelines for ICCP system design. An evaluation of suitability of where and when to use the approach in ICCP systems is given. Results and benefits achieved by two constructed systems, one being a trial prototype and one a complete ICCP system, are presented.
