With the rapid expansion of the workforce in the power industry, many new and some experienced personnel are unfamiliar with surge protection, its equipment, and its associated concepts. This problem is due to many factors such as its relative cost and perceived importance compared to other more expensive equipment, as well as the overall challenge to understand the concepts themselves. For example, transformer and breaker ratings are straightforward whereas arrester ratings are not. This paper examines one utility's approach to develop an internal application guide based on industry standards that can be used by laymen working on the utility's facilities that can eliminate or significantly reduce arrester application errors. This internal guide addresses basic challenges to common application and explains the utility's unique philosophy about surge protection that is easy for internal personnel to understand. This practice has resulted in significantly fewer arrester failures and misapplications by personnel that are not surge protection experts, which in turn has provided greater surge protection for the utility's equipment.
