Objective: To investigate influence of administration of Shenxiao decoction on the expression of NADPH oxidase, renal function and structure in diabetic nephropathy rat. Method: Experimental diabetic nephropathy model was induced by nephrectomy combined with streptozotocin (STZ) injection in sprague-dawley rat. Shenxiao decoction and Irbesartan were orally administrated respectively for 16 weeks, and the expression of NADPH oxidase subunit p22hox was measured. 24 h urine protein excretion (Upro) and renal pathological changes were observed. Results: The ratio of urinary protein excretion, the renal protein expression of p22phox were significantly increased in diabetic nephropathy rat, and the renal protein expression of Cu-Zn-SOD were significantly decreased in diabetic nephropathy rat.Shenxiao decoction and Irbesartan treatment can significantly prevent these changes in diabetic nephropathy rat. Conclusion: Shenxiao decoction treatment can significantly decrease the renal oxidative stress level, lessen the renal oxidative damage, and produce the protection of kidney in diabetic nephropathy rat.
