While the average life expectancy is known to be exceptionally long in Japan, it is less well known that there is a kind of North to South gradient in longevity over the Japanese islands, with the longest life expectancy apparently being those who inhabit Okinawa prefecture, the southernmost islands of Japan, also known as the Ryukyu Islands [1-3].
