Radical Nephrectomy for Management of Small Renal Mass in Elderly Patients: Therapeutic Heresy or Voice of Reason?

Partial nephrectomy (PN) is now the new reference standard for management of small renal masses. Both the American and the European Urological Associations recommend nephron-sparing surgery (NSS) when resection of a small enhancing renal mass (SRM) is warranted. Indeed, NSS is an indispensible tool in the armamentarium of the modern kidney surgeon. In expert hands, nearly any T1 and the vast majority of T2 renal masses can be resected employing minimally invasive or traditional open NSS techniques.
