~(129)I IN MACROALGAE (FUCUS VESICULOSUS) FROM THE SWEDISH COAST

The macroalgae Fucus vesiculosus is a good bioindicator for radioactive iodine. In this work the algae have been used for studying ~(129)I along the Swedish coast at 40 sampling stations from 1982-1983, 1986-1988, 1991-1995 to 2007. In 2007 also water samples were taken and analyzed by AMS at Centro Nacional de Aceleradores (Seville, Spain). In addition ~(137)Cs was analyzed. ~(129)I in the area may originate from natural occurrence, fallout from atmospheric nuclear tests, releases from the Chernobyl accident and discharge from European nuclear fuel reprocessing facilities.
