Real-Time Compositional Procedures for Mediated Soloist-Ensemble Interaction: The Comprovisador

Comprovisador is a real-time, networked system through which a conductor/composer mediates the interaction between a solo improviser and an ensemble of musicians who sight-read an animated score. The system uses multiple computers - one host and several clients - to perform algorithmic compositional procedures with the musical material improvised by the soloist and to coordinate the response of the ensemble. The present paper focuses on main aspects of the compositional algorithms used, overviewing the concept and structure of this system as well as describing the main features of its notation interface. Some of the real-world opportunities for development and testing that have occurred are also reported.
