Our involvement in the development of wood products protection systems dates back to the inception of our research group during late 1986, when we were Chemical Specialties, Inc. (CSI). The approach we took, and have maintained to this day, was basedaround the use of long-term field testing with a variety of test methodologies at geographically diverse test sites, in addition to research on the fundamental understanding of the chemistries involved. This philosophy was a direct consequence of involvement in the development of AAC preservatives in New Zealand in the 1970s, where commercialization of a product based on an over-reliance on laboratory testing without a rigorous field test protocol led to premature service failures and subsequent withdrawal of the product with serious financial implications. While in a relatively small market such as New Zealand the consequences were limited, we determined that our more conservative approach was appropriate for the development of Jong-term wood protection systems for application in the much larger, and potentially more litigious, North America markets. We continue to follow this approach to this day.
