摘要

This authoritative volume, which contains 40 fully peer-reviewed papers presented at the Second International Symposium on Stock Enhancement and Sea Ranching, held in Japan, is essential reading for anyone interested in 'the state of the art' of stockenhancement and sea ranching. In recent years stock enhancement has attracted increasing attention as a fisheries management tool, with fairly large-scale programmes being undertaken in a number of countries. A number of contributors to the volume point out that very few stock enhancement programmes have been designed as scientific experiments, and that the effects, both positive and negative, of most programmes on wild stocks are unknown. Stock enhancement programmes have typically been driven from a political level, and have beensubstantially funded due to their perceived societal benefits. While a number of case studies are reported in this volume, the focus of many of the contributions is the need to develop more robust methodologies to quantify the results of reseeding and stock enhancement exercises.
