The high temperature polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell system has potential for high efficiency, low emissions, and high quality heat provision. The greater tolerance to carbon monoxide of this fuel cell type also simplifies the fuel processing required for integrated system design. Given the advantages, the high temperature PEM fuel cell is a promising candidate for small-scale combined heat and power, despite the current barriers of reliability and cost. This study evaluates the performance of a high temperature PEM fuel cell system.
