Recent developments in Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUV's) have created renewed interest in the application of air-independent fuel cells to meet these undersea power requirements. Several such systems have been previously been developed by General Electric, United Technologies and Siemens among others. The attraction for such systems has been the potential for high performance, long life and high energy density allowing for extended mission operations and simple recharge.
