Nondestructive Testing of Damp Vault Brickwork in a Gothic-Renaissance City Hall

The results of tests aimed at determining the dampness of the vault walls in a well-known in Europe Gothic-Renaissance city hall are presented. Because of the restrictions on interference in the historic structure of brickwork, the testing was done using the nondestructive dielectric method. As a result of experiments carried out during the tests correlations between the readings of the dielectric meter used and the moisture content in the brickwork have been established. On the basis of the test results the causes of the dampness and the range of work to be carried out in order to restore the utilitarian function of the vaults have been determined.
