The Boeing 787 Dreamliner entered into service as the pinnacle of aerospace excellence in terms of design, efficiency, reliability and passenger comfort. Many new technologies have been implemented including advanced composite structures and a more electric based flight control actuation system, using high pressure (5000 PSI) hydraulics, with the goal of reduced weight and lower operating costs. The power plant choice for this aircraft is airline customer selected and to date is divided quite evenly between Rolls Royce with the Trent 1000 engine and General Electric with the GenX engine. Both engines have a high degree of on board real time health monitoring systems installed including the subject of this paper, Eaton QDM (Quantitative Debris Monitoring) also known as Eaton ODMS, Oil Debris Monitoring System, as well as Vibration and the most comprehensive messaging and alert systems using telemetry flying today.
