A new approach of conceptual design for a hybird mechanical system is firstly presented in the paper ,and a new mechanical system can be automatically generated by combining basic mechanical units, in particularly, to generate alternate mechanism concepts. Beginning with kinematic functions of the input and output of a unit, which are presented as the input and output characteristic state vectors. And then, the characteristic state equations are defined according to the input and output functional characteristic state vectors. Meanwhile, the characteristic state space can also be established by motion relationship between the multiple inputs and the outputs. And then, the combination models (series and parallel combined pattern )are provided from the different combination of unit with different generalized characteristic state equations. Additionally, the properties of characteristic state space for the different combination of basic mechanical units are intensively researched and the decomposition rules of characteristic state equations are discussed in detail. By manipulating the matrices and the vectors, a given task can be decomposed into subfuntions. The equation and matrix scheme serves as a formal means to perform these tasks, as follow :(a) to represent and reason with the basic mechanical units at different levels of abstrction. (b) to represent and reason with the combination pattern at different levels of abstrction. ( c )to generate alternate conceptual design scheme including basic mechanical units or their combination. An example is given to show the application of the approach.
